Carl Eugene Gunter, 88, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on July 8, 2015, at the Cypress Retirement Center in Raleigh, NC. Gene was born in Andalusia, Alabama on April 5, 1927. Gene was preceded in death by his mother and father, John Quincy Gunter and Lillian Holmes Gunter, and his former wife, Jewell Forsyth Gunter.
Gene will be remembered as a devoted and loyal husband and father. He enjoyed a lifelong love of books, reading and learning that inspired those around him. He was a man strong in mind, body and spirit who led by example. He will be remembered in many ways by his family, friends, business associates and customers.
After graduation from high school, he entered the U.S. Army. He spent his first two years of military service receiving intensive Japanese language training. He was stationed in Japan from 1945 until 1948 as a linguist during the U.S. Occupation.
Upon his discharge from Military Service, Gene began a long and varied career in the furniture business. He joined the family furniture and appliance business, Gunter-Dunn Furniture.
In 1971 the family business was acquired by Johnson Stores, Inc. Gene moved to Raleigh, NC to become President & CEO. In 1975 he was employed as President & CEO of Maxwell Furniture, a chain of retail stores with stores locations throughout the Southeast headquartered in Miami, Florida. In 1978, Gene moved his family to Lenoir, NC where he joined Broyhill Furniture Industries becoming President & CEO before his retirement in 1994.
Gene is survived by his wife, Bettye Evans Breedlove Gunter of Raleigh; his daughter, Laura Allen and her husband, Graham Page Allen and their children, Harris, Graham and Cullen, of Raleigh; his son, John Gunter and his wife, Robin and their daughter Denise, of Raleigh; his son, Michael Gunter and his children, Kyle and Ryan of Raleigh.
The family will receive friends on Friday, July 10, 2015 from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh NC 27612.
A service celebrating his life will be held at White Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1704 Oberlin Road, Raleigh 27608 at 2:00 pm on Saturday, July 11, 2015.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to White Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1704 Oberlin Road, Raleigh 27608 or a charity of your choice.
