Simpson Grant Taylor

(June 05, 1931 - September 06, 2016)

Simpson Grant Taylor, 85, Beckley, WV, a resident patient at Harper Mills Nursing Home (Heartland of Beckley) died Tuesday, September 6, 2016. He appreciated those who cared for him on the staff at his “home” since 2003, after moving from the Veterans Home in Barbourville, WV, following a stroke.

Born June 5, 1931, at Lego, Raleigh County, WV, the son of Grant Ulysses Taylor, a coal miner, and Mary Ellen (Wickline) Taylor, a homemaker, Grant was the fifth child in a family of eleven children. The family moved frequently, following work in the coalmines in Raleigh County, Wyoming County, and Fayette County, WV. They eventually moved to Allen Junction, WV, where his father also served as Justice of the Peace for Wyoming County for twenty years. He attended Mullens High School, Mullens, WV.

Beginning in 1950, Grant served in the Army Air Corp and the United States Air Force. While based in Japan, California and Andrews Air Force Base (Pentagon), he utilized his office operational skills proudly. His last assignment was as a recruiter at the Beckley USAF Recruitment Office. He served during the Korean War (1950-1952), and later during the “Cold War.”

While residing in Jacksonville, FL, he worked on the skilled labor crew that helped build the Isaiah David Hart Bridge, which spanned the St. John’s River from Beach Blvd. to the downtown area and the sports stadiums. The “Green Monster” bridge opened on November 2, 1967.

When he returned to West Virginia from Florida, he applied to work at the VA Hospital in Beckley, WV, where he served as a hospital attendant responsible for the nonmedical care of patients and the maintenance of order and cleanliness of the hospital, in addition to clerical duties. While an employee and a patient in VA Hospitals in Beckley, WV, St. Petersburg, FL, and Bethesda, MD, he learned useful crafts, including sewing crazy quilts to use as small lap quilts or baby quilts, and recycled products for home use.

In addition, Grant was a life-long, avid hunter and fisherman. Hunting the hills and fishing the streams and rivers of West Virginia or the creeks, lakes, rivers, and the ocean in Florida with his brothers and friends were his favorite outdoor sports.

His parents, Grant Ulysses Taylor (1901-1979) and Mary Ellen (Wickline) Taylor (1907-1980), four brothers, William Ransom Taylor (1924-1951), killed in a mining accident, and his wife, Emma Lee (Workman) Taylor Kardish (1922-2004), Charles Jackson “Jack” Taylor (1926-1991), and his wife, Ida Geneva (Workman) Taylor (1924-2007), Thomas “Tom” Waldron Taylor (1927-1985), and his wife, Esther Bradie (Shrewsberry) Taylor (1923-2006), and M. Sgt. Grover Robert Taylor (1941-1966), killed in South Viet Nam, two sisters, Mary Elizabeth (Taylor) Elliott, (1928-2013) and her husband, James Edward Elliott (1918-2006), and Virginia Lee (Taylor) Meyers (1933-2009), and her husband, Bobby Dale Meyers (1932-2011), predeceased him.

Two brothers, Dr. Franklin Delano Taylor, Sr. and his wife, Patricia Anne (Moore) Taylor, Jacksonville, FL, and Danny Rae Taylor, Mullens, WV, and two sisters, Shirley Ann Taylor, Yulee, FL, and Ruth Danese (Taylor) Collins, and her husband, Robert “Bob” Chester Collins, Sr., Middletown, DE, many cousins, nieces and nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews survived him.

A private interment will be held at the Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery in Institute, Kanawha County, WV.
