Abby Marie (Morong) Behnke, 81, of 2749 Muscatine St., passed away peacefully at 2:45 a.m. Friday, April 24, 2009, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque, surrounded by her loving family.
Private family services will be held. The Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., is in charge of arrangements.
Abby was born September 10, 1927, in Dubuque, daughter of Joseph H. and Anna (Nutz) Morong. She graduated from Senior High School. She married Frank ("Fritz") Behnke on June 24, 1950, at Nativity Church, in Dubuque, IA.
Abby was known for her green thumb, and her home and yard were always adorned with beautiful flowers. She enjoyed playing bingo and was a regular at the Dubuque Greyhound Park & Casino, where she loved to play the slot machines. Her face would always light up at the thought of beating the one-armed bandit. In her younger years, Abby loved to go fishing with her family along the banks of the Mississippi River, and usually would have the big catch of the day. Despite being ill for much of her life, she was always spunky and had a quick wit. She enjoyed watching Westerns and game shows and eating good pie.
Abby was an adoring wife and mother, and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Frank; a son, Mike (Joy) Behnke of Dubuque, IA; a daughter, Mary (Don) Menadue of Cascade, IA; five grandchildren: Tricia Behnke, of Dubuque, IA; Shawn (Amber) Menadue, of Grimes, IA; Laura Behnke, of Madison, WI; Kelly Menadue, of Cascade, IA; and Chris Menadue, of Cascade, IA; five great grandchildren: Michael, Andrew, Mia, Caden, and Natalia; one sister, Rita (LeRoy "Swede") Pulver, of Bloomfield, IA; and a sister-in-law, Hilda Petesch, of Cedar Rapids, IA.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald J. ("Mike") Morong, and Joesph H. Morong, and six sisters; Shirley Ann Morong (in infancy), Clara Fuhrman, Annette Holcomb, Ruth Furry, Mary Jane Breiner, and Helen Marburger.
In lieu of flowers, an Abby Behnke Memorial Fund has been established.
