She was born in Hartsville, South Carolina to the late Russell Ray and Kate Mosely Gardner. The family moved to Hamlet in 1942 where Jewell grew up and attended school. After graduation, Jewell attended Rex School of Nursing in Raleigh. She worked for the N.C. Department of Agriculture, Seed Testing Lab where she retired with 36 years of service. She later worked for Macy's and Yankee Candle Co.
