David William Shanks was the son of Col. Thomas Shanks and Grace M Thomas. He was a Presbyterian minister, receiving his degree at Washington College, now Washington and Lee University. He was born in Fincastle, Botetourt Co., VA. He married twice, to Miss Callie Niles, who died in 1858 and second to Juliet M. Cabell Irvine.

On the 9 Sep 1870 Natural Bridge, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found Minister of God David W Shanks, 39; Juliet Shanks, 35; Lewis Shanks, 11; Grace Shanks, 7; David Shanks, 4; Minerva Shanks, 3; Eliza Shanks, 2 and Juliet Shanks, 11/12, born in August, all VA born.

Plus in Alexander Brown's book, The Cabells and Their Kin, A Memorial Volume of History, Biography, and Genealogy, 1895, p 375-376. Plus in Genealogy of the Shanks family in America, by David C Shanks, p 19 state David Wm Shanks was the son of Thomas Shanks and Grace Thomas.

D W Shanks, a minister of the gospel, was aged 64, when he died in Danville, VA on 4 Mar 1894. He was born in Botetourt and was married (FS).

His obit was in the Staunton Spectator dated 7 Mar 1894. It incorrectly identifies his father as Phineas Shank.

His marker says:
DAVID WILLIAM SHANKS D.D.
DEC. 11, 1830,
MARCH 4, 1894.
He that believeth on the
Son hath everlasting life."
