Selic A. Sawyer, the first soldier enlisted from Whitesville, NY, to be killed in the Great Civil War, was born near Whitesville, Allegany County, New York on December 12, 1841. His parents were Aholiab and Matilda Lee Sawyer, who moved to Whitesville when Selic was a small boy.
In 1856, Selic commenced work in the foundry at Whitesville, owned by Charles C. Allen, and continued to work there until September 12, 1861, when he enlisted and went to war.
He was killed in action at Fair Oaks, Virginia, May 31, 1862. [More ...]

The first burials at Richmond National Cemetery included re-interments from the SEVEN PINES Battlefield.
