Frederick "Fred" Lee Steffel, 60, died Saturday morning, August 13, 2016, doing what he loved the most – riding his bike on the Neuse River Trail. He suffered a massive heart attack and passed quickly. Many people tried to save him and we thank them for that.

He was an inventive soul. He always would look at ways to rework items and tools. He could fix anything. He had the patience of Job and would work until he got it right. He was an excellent listener who always cared about others. He was a deep thinker who would amaze you with his plans. He could have been an engineer. He was always trying to figure out how to improve any situation. He was very resourceful. He was a simple man who would say, "Do I need it or do I want it?" He was generous, kind, caring, and patient. He never put himself first and never raised his voice.

He loved being outside working on various projects in the yard or in his man cave tool shop. He loved working on bicycles and riding. Riding 25 miles was a piece of cake. He loved quietness and beauty along the bike trails. He loved jet skiing with his brother. He loved fishing with his father on his boat until his father passed. His family meant everything to him. He always told stories about adventures with his brothers. He was a ping pong champion. He could grill the best steaks and hamburgers and loved a good BBQ sandwich. Fred was spunky, handsome, fit and had a beautiful soul. He loved playing pool.

Fred was born May 29, 1956 in Raleigh, NC to Jim and Dorothy Steffel. He grew up in Raleigh near Carroll Middle School and had many good times with his friends and family. He deeply loved his church and had a strong faith. He survived a horrific motorcycle accident in his 20's. He helped raise two nieces and took care of his parents until their demise. He loved the beach and searching for shark teeth. But most of all he loved his fiancé, Diane. He called her his beautiful bride and she called him my handsome prince. He danced in the kitchen with Diane. He held her hand every night and told her how much he loved her. If she cooked a good meal, he would say, "This is mighty good – thank you Diane." Every night he held Diane tightly and told her how much he loved her and that he was so grateful to be together. That was the best time of day. He was the best hugger. He was her middle school boyfriend. They reconnected after 39 years and enjoyed 5 years together. They did everything together. They gardened, rode bikes, searched for shark teeth, rode roller coasters, walked, took trips, you name it. They were two peas in a pod – soulmates.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, James and Dorothy Steffel. He is survived by his fiancée Diane Barbour; 3 siblings, Jim (Renee) Steffel, Tommy (Rina) Steffel, and Theresa White. He is also survived by 7 nieces, English (Bryan) Sisk, Sierra (Josh) Lohmann, Lindsay (Brian) Joyce, Brittany Hicks, Tina (Garland) Booth, Tara (Leo) Edwards, and Tonya Price; and his dog, Alfie.

The family will receive friends 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday, August 18, 2016 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Road, Raleigh, NC 27609.

A mass will be held 1:00 PM Friday, August 19, 2016 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2718 Overbrook Drive, Raleigh, NC 27608. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium.
