Woodrow Wilson Bolick, 87, of Charlottesville, VA, died Monday, November 20, 2006, in the company of family. Woody, as he was known to everyone he met, was born and educated in North Carolina before settling in Charlottesville with his bride Evangeline in 1942. For the next six and a half decades he was an upstanding and energetic member of the Charlottesville community.
Woody worked his entire professional career for the textile manufacturing firm, Frank Ix & Sons. From 1941, when he started as a loom fixer, until his retirement in 1987, Woody pursued his job with a tireless work ethic forged from his modest childhood in the Depression. Moving through the ranks into line management in 1943, he was named plant superintendent in 1958, and in 1964 was promoted to the position of Plant Manager and Vice President of Manufacturing. He held this position until 1976, when he was transferred to the company's accounting and computer center in Union City, New Jersey, to organize a new department for customer service. Woody and Van spent five years in New Jersey before returning to the Charlottesville home where they raised their children and lived for sixty years.

Throughout his career, Woody was active in civic and community activities, having held Board positions in the Chamber of Commerce, United Way, Boy Scouts of America, Basic Advanced Management, and Piedmont Virginia Community College. He was active in the Lions Club, serving as Vice President, as well as the Jaycees in earlier years. He was a member of the Lynchburg Scottish Rite Bodies, ACCA Temple, Piedmont Shrine Club and Widows' Sons' Lodge No. 60. He was also an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving as a deacon and elder.

Woody completed the Basic Advanced Management Program at the Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia. He was one of eight men responsible for the formation of the Central Virginia Chapter of the Society of Advanced Management and in 1976 was named Professional Manager of the Year by that society. Believing that there was a need for technical education in the community, Woody served on the committee responsible for the founding of the Charlottesville Albemarle Technical School (CATEC). He also served on the founding board of Piedmont Virginia Community College and is credited with being the person who gave the college its name.

Woody Bolick never met a stranger. He believed that optimism and a positive attitude were the keys to happiness in life. Whether as a volunteer at the soup kitchen, a neighborhood ambassador passing out fresh vegetables from his garden, or a greeter at church until the Sunday before his passing, he was always willing to share a story, a joke or a word of encouragement. Woody loved people, and was blessed with a bounty of lifelong friends and neighbors including his "exercise family" at the Martha Jefferson Cardiac Rehab Center.

Woody was predeceased by his wife of sixty years, Evangeline Sizemore Bolick. He is survived by his three daughters and their spouses: Sandra and Mark Finn of Virginia Beach, Cynthia and Jim Stultz of Charlottesville, and Laurie and Jeff Irby of Atlanta; and by his four grandchildren, Marty, Alex, Jonathan, and Casey; and one great-grandchild, Carson. He is also survived by his brothers Hubert Bolick of Burlington, NC, and Harold Bolick of Winston Salem, NC.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Gregory Doull, Lana Bolton and Carolyn Burton who lovingly cared for Woody for many years as well as Ed Hickerson and Phil Quillon who kept a special neighborhood watch over him.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 26, 2006, from 4:00 until 5:30 p.m. at Hill and Wood Funeral Home. The memorial service will be held on Monday, November 27, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 500 Park Street, Charlottesville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Woodrow W. Bolick Scholarship Fund. Checks should be made payable to the PVCC Educational Foundation and mailed to Piedmont Virginia Community College, 501 College Drive, Charlottesville, VA 22902.
