Early Life: Ben was born January 3, 1934, to Carl Alva and Vera Penrod Patten. He grew up in Elberta, Utah, graduating from Payson High School, where he played football, track, basketball and the trombone.
Life's Work/Service/Interests: He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Canada. Upon returning, he attended Brigham Young University where he met the love of his life, Karol June Payne. They were married for over 57 years before she passed away April 21, 2016. He received his Bachelor's and Master's degree from BYU, and his Doctorate in Fine Arts from Illinois State University, Normal, Illinois. He was always a teacher. He taught at Texas Women's University, Denton, Texas; New Mexico Highlands University, Las Vegas, New Mexico; University of Utah, Utah Technical College, and finishing his career, as an educator, at Valley Junior High in West Valley City, Utah. In every aspect of his life, he taught. He was always willing to help others achieve what they didn't think they could do. He was heavily involved in Scouting, from a "lone" Scout in Elberta to serving as Scoutmaster several times. He was always a teacher. While in Utah, Ben and Karol resided in Bountiful many years and then moved to Orem to be closer to their grandchildren. They raised three children: Craig Payne Patten (wife Joy Cook, grandson Braden Patten and granddaughter Madison Patten), of Utah; Lori Michelle Patten, of Texas; and Kendal David Patten, of Utah. Ben and Karol enthusiastically served as temple workers in the Bountiful Utah LDS Temple. They continued their service as Church Educational Service missionaries in Tahiti, French Polynesia. Ben also had the opportunity to assist in painting a mural in the Draper Utah LDS Temple. Following a long battle with Alzheimer's, Benton Penrod Patten passed from this life August 9, 2016.
Family Message: "We are happy that he is reunited with his wife, Karol, but we are deeply sorrowed to lose a truly great man from this realm. Thank you Mom and Dad, you are the best parents in the world!!! Light & Love..."
