Freddie Love Henley Hires, 88, of Cross City, Florida, went to meet her Heavenly Father on Saturday, August 6, 2016. She served God faithfully as a loving wife, amazing mother, devoted 'Grandma' and dedicated teacher. Born January 29, 1928, in Cabbage Grove, Florida, Freddie Love was the firstborn child of Elmo and Erma Hamilton.
Freddie married John E. 'Johnny' Henley in December 1947 in Steinhatchee, where they raised their four children until Johnny's death in 1964. She was married to Grady Hires from 1972 until his death in 2014.
Freddie graduated from Salem High School and Florida State University. She taught school in Steinhatchee and Jena, but spent most of her career at Anderson Elementary in Cross City. Upon retirement, Freddie was active in the Steinhatchee Garden Club, the AARP and Dixie County Retired Educators Association. She was a founding member of the Steinhatchee American Legion Auxiliary Post 291. Freddie served God faithfully at First Baptist Church of Steinhatchee.
Freddie is survived by her children: Linda (David) Fultz, Sue (Max) Chewning, Connie H. Sheppard and John E. 'Edd' Henley, Jr.; stepchildren: Don (Sandra) Hires, Bobby Joe (Nelia) Hires, Darlene (Bill) Geiger and Rodney (Karen) Hires.
Freddie's life was greatly enriched by her precious blessings, her nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings: Howard (Joyce) Hamilton, Mary Virginia (J.D.) Cannon, Pat (Herman) Gamble and Tommy (Diane) Hamilton.
Freddie was preceded in death by her husbands, Johnny Henley and Grady Hires; grandsons, Chad A. Reed, Sr. and Arthur Hires; son-in-law, David Sheppard; her parents; and dear friends, R.V. and Inez Green.
