Jazz Musician, Songwriter. A saxophonist and flutist, he will be remembered for his work with the ensemble "The Blackbirds." They scored a Top 10 hit on the American Pop Charts with their single "Walking In Rhythm" (1974). He enlisted with the United States Military during the Vietnam War and attended the United States Naval School of Music. When fellow Detroit native musician Donald Byrd was putting together a group, he had Barnes in mind and "The Blackbyrds" came to fruition in Washington, D.C. Their self-titled, debut album was released in 1974 and contained the song "Summer Love" which was written by Barnes. This was followed with "Flying Start" (1974), which included their signature hit "Walking in Rhythm." The song which featured a memorable flute solo by Barnes, achieved a number six placing on the American Pop Charts. Additionally, he wrote the songs "Blackbyrd's Theme" (co-wrote) and "April Showers" from the same album. Barnes went on to other projects including his own ensemble "Allan Barnes and Primetime," in addition to hosting the documentary series "Jazzland." He is not to be confused with the British jazz musician Alan Barnes.
