The Madison Police Department lost a dedicated partner and loyal friend July 16, 2016. Canine Officer Eros died unexpectedly from Turned Stomach Syndrome. The five-year old German Shepherd donned a different uniform, but sported the same badge, spirit and commitment of his colleagues in blue. Officer Eros, who was born on Dec. 20, 2010 in the Czech Republic, joined the Madison police force in September 2013 after a two-year training stint with Faus K9 Specialities of Elkart, IN. Captain Rick Mundt served as Officer Eros’ leader and caretaker and together the two contributed over 570 hours to attain certification from the North American Police Work Association. During his 34-month tenure with the Madison Police Department, Officer Eros assisted with over 60 drug arrests and the confiscation of 116 grams of illegal drugs. His career highlight entailed tracking and discovering a fleeing suspect in a town dumpster. Always “ready to come to work,” Officer Eros loved his job and fellow associates, as well as other K9 students that he would meet in periodical training sessions. Sometimes in the continuing education classes, Officer Eros would get so excited interacting with the other canines that Cpt. Mundt would have to take him aside for a little calming time. And when it came time to go home each day, Officer Eros loved that world too. There at Cpt. Mundt’s personal home, he enjoyed tender loving care, head rubs, treats and yard frolics with Cpt. Mundt’s wife and children. One of his favorite games was to run and jump into the kennel with either he or the children in pursuit. The Madison Police department definitely feels the void of Officer Eros, their friend and partner in the quest to serve and protect.
