Daniel was the son of William Davidson and Sarah Carson Smith. His father was reportedly born in Burke County, NC. Daniel was born in NC, possibly Buncombe co. where some of his siblings were apparently born. Daniel moved, probably with his parents, to San Augustine TX about 1840. His parents both died in San Augustine. Daniel and his wife Almira Willson Smith moved to Tyler Co with her parents and siblings about 1850.
According to this newer headstone, D.R. Smith died June 11, 1862, however I've found county records that indicate a death date of June 8, 1862.
