COOPER, DR. SAMUEL LONG, MD and DMD, 83, died Monday, November 7, 2005. Dr. Cooper was born September 7, 1922, in Alamogordo, N.M., the elder son of Lindsey Gilmore and Vida Long Cooper. He spent his youth in Louisville, KY., before moving to Tallahassee, where he graduated from Leon High School. Dr. Cooper graduated from Western Kentucky University and received his DMD and MD degrees from the University of Louisville. He practiced both dentistry and otolaryngology in Louisville. Dr. Cooper served as a dentist and later as a physician in the Kentucky Air National Guard, where he was on active duty during the Korean War. He rose to the rank of colonel and served as flight surgeon in the Kentucky Air National Guard and was appointed the state air surgeon for Kentucky. He retired from the Air National Guard after 34 years of service. Dr. Cooper returned to Tallahassee after retirement. Dr. Cooper will be remembered for his devotion to his family friends and patients, as well as his devotion to his churches, Cooper Memorial Methodist Church and Tallahassee Heights United Methodist Church, of which his parents were founding members. He loved flying with the Air National Guard, gardening and tinkering with his tractors. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Kathleen Wade Cooper; his four children, Linda Cooper Burgert of Midland, MI., Dr. Lindsey Wade Cooper (and wife Kimberly) of Nashville, TN., Dr. Marion Samuel Cooper (and wife Nancy) of Tallahassee and retired Capt. Carol Jean Cooper, Navy Judge Advocate General Corps of Bethesda, MD.; four grandchildren, Lindsey Wade Cooper Jr. (and wife Laurie) of Washington, D.C., Courtney Cooper Jenrath (and husband Douglas) of Nashville and Tracy Lee Cooper and Christina Diane Cooper, both of Tallahassee; and a great-grandson, Samuel McCullough Cooper of Washington, D.C. Family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. EST Thursday at Culley's Meadow Wood Funeral Home, Timberlane Road Chapel (850-893-4177).
