115 RAF Squadron's Vickers Wellington Mk IC (#R1221) aircraft, with a crew of six, took flight from its base at RAF Marham in Norfolk; It was one of the 29 Wellingtons(nine of which were from 115 Squadron) despatched on an air operation targeting Germany's Hipper Class Cruiser warships in the harbour near Brest in France. R 1221 was on its return to base when it crashed, after flying into a tree near East Winch, about 5 miles from King's Lynn, taking the lives of the crew.
