Shirley was born April 7, 1937 in Albert (Oney), Oklahoma, the daughter of Floy Elmer and Nellie Marie (Jackson) Meeks.
She resided in Albert until she married Coyle "Joe" Bohn after only knowing each other three days. They celebrated their 58th Wedding Anniversary last year.
Shirley supported her husband's military career. The family resided in Lawton/Fort Sill, Oklahoma in between duty stations elsewhere such as Fort Riley, Kansas, El Paso, Texas, and three tours in Germany.
She was a past member of the Night Owls, Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW, and President of the NCO Wives Club. She was also a realtor for many years.
When her husband was stationed in Vietnam in 1965, she wrote a letter to the Oklahoma City Daily News about the needs of military personnel serving in Vietnam. She was trying to gather personal hygiene items for the troops fighting in the war. The letter went nationwide. Citizens and corporations throughout the United States donated tons of supplies to be sent overseas. The initiative was titled "Operation Snowball/Operation Merry Christmas".
Shirley was known for her fried pies, chocolate cake, sewing skills, love of animals, constant smile and being the pillar of strength in the family. She was known as "Grandma" to many. Shirley was focused on making sure the needs of others were met before taking care of herself. One individual recently stated, "What a neat lady she was and will always be."
She was preceded in death by her parents; a great-grandson, Gunner Bohn; and niece, Sallie Mickle.
She is survived by her husband; three sons, Robert (and Linda) Bohn of Sterling, Oklahoma, Terry (and Laura) Bohn of Jenks, Oklahoma and Brian (and Mindy) Bohn of Wichita Falls, Texas; daughters, Ann Matthew of Frederick, Oklahoma, Jody Maples of Lawton and Helmut Nunez-Morales of Tacoma, Washington; 14 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; sister, Sharon Annette (and Finis) Oliphant; a nephew, Josh Cuykendall; and four nieces, Emily Keller, Cindy Kelley, Shelly Disse, and Penny Oliphant.
Visitation with family will be 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at Whinery Huddleston Funeral Home in Lawton. .
Services will be at 9:00 a.m., Thursday, June 23, 2016, at Whinery Huddleston's Funeral Home, officiated by her eldest son, Robert Bohn.
Burial at Fort Sill National Cemetery in Elgin, Oklahoma.
