William R. Shaw, 75, died Monday, June 13, 2016, at his home in Oxford, MS.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 15, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at College Hill Presbyterian Church in Oxford, MS with Rev. Alan Cochet officiating.
Burial will follow in College Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from Noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service in the fellowship hall.

Born on July 20, 1940, in the community of College Hill in Oxford, MS, to the late Parham Rufus and Floyce Crook Shaw.

Mr. Shaw earned a B.S. degree in Forestry from Mississippi State University.

After graduation, he served as County Forester in Webster, Calhoun and Lafayette Counties.

He then worked for 23 years as a procurement forester for a company in Oxford that through the years changed its ownership and changed its name from U.S. Plywood to Champion International to Georgia Pacific.

After retirement from Georgia Pacific he worked for several years in a partnership buying and selling timber and land.

He began wood turning and has refined his skills over many years.

He started his company, Backwood Bowls, and began exhibiting at art festivals around the South.

He has used his knowledge and appreciation for the beauty of the woods, his experience, and his artistry to produce items including bowls, trays and vases.

He was a member of the Mid-South Woodturner’s Guild.

He served on the board of directors for Northeast Power Company for over 40 years and was an elder at College Hill Presbyterian Church.

Along with his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Shannon Tucker Shaw.

He is survived by his daughters, Leigh Shaw Fox and her husband, Chip of Oxford, MS; Lynn Shaw Fleming and her husband, Jeff of Germantown, TN; Lara Shaw Archer and her husband, Doug of Oxford, MS and Erin Reese Shaw of Chattanooga, TN; a sister, Jane Shaw Johnson of Canadian, TX; a brother, Robert Sydney Shaw of Oxford, MS and four grandchildren, Jeffrey Taylor Fleming of Memphis, TN, Tucker Alexander Fox of Oxford, MS, Molly Douglas Archer of Oxford, MS and Thomas Neal Archer of Oxford, MS.

Memorial contributions in Mr. Shaw’s memory may be made to the Barnabas Ministry, c/o College Hill Presbyterian Church, 339 CR 102, Oxford, MS 38655 or to the College Hill Cemetery Fund that supports maintaining the grounds of the beautiful historic College Hill Presbyterian Church.
