Artie was born in Momence, Illinois, where her family had settle during the expulsion of the Acadians during the French and Indian War. She and her family had moved to Sharps Creek, McPherson County, Kansas by the time she was two. They were living in Peters, Klingman, Kansas by the time she was six and her family was living in Manchester, Grant County, Oklahoma by the time she was sixteen.

She spoke only French until she was sixteen years old. She started learning English when she met her future husband, W. Arthur Kuykendall. She also tatted beautiful lace.

They were married on 24 Dec 1896 in Gibbon, Grant County, Oklahoma (about half way between Manchester and Wakita). They are the parents of the following:
