Ben Allen Thomas, 96, of Shelbyville, Kentucky, died peacefully at home on Monday, June 6, 2016. Born April 23, 1920, he was the son of Ben Allen Thomas II and Vestina (Bailey) Thomas of Shelbyville.

Ben Allen attended school in Shelbyville, Kentucky, and was the valedictorian for the Shelbyville High School Class of 1937 and gradated from Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1942. He played football for Transylvania, and was president of the Kappa Alpha fraternity his senior year.

He was a Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy during World War II, flying as a co-pilot in a photo squadron doing reconnaissance in the Pacific. He helped photograph numerous islands, as well as the coast of China. After returning home, he spent the rest of his life partnering with his brother in the management of Chenoweth Farm.

He was a respected member of the Shelby County Community , serving for many years on the boards of Shelby County Trust / Commonwealth Bank, Shelby County Farm Bureau, Dairymen Inc., Western District Tobacco Warehousing, and was a founding member of the Cropper Ruritan Club.

He was an Elder and Sunday school teacher in First Christian Church for many years. At the time of his death, he attended Community Presbyterian Church in Louisville, Kentucky. Ben Allen also loved to play bridge, and tell funny stories about his like and family.

In addition to his parents, preceding him in death were 2 grandsons, Andrew Thomas of Shelbyville, Kentucky and Thomas Falconer, of Aylesbury, England.
