Former Shawnee resident Katie Ellen Watts Ashford, 86, currently of Houston, Texas, died Friday, Oct. 6, in Houston, from complications of congestive heart failure.
She was born Aug. 25, 1920, in Shawnee to Ray and Maude (Wallace) Watts.

Katie was married July 21, 1941, to Al Ashford. He preceded her in death on Aug. 7, 1986.

She was an employee of Sylvania Plant, Wilson Greenhouse and retired from the Shawnee Public Library. She was a member of Draper Street Methodist Church and later joined Wesley United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Ernest, Glen, Jimmy Dale and William; and a baby sister, Mary Lou.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Lynda and Steve Hillner of Texas; brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Nancy Cole of California; grandsons and granddaughters-in-law, Les and Melissa McGuire of Oklahoma City, Eric and Jessica Hillner of Virginia, and U.S. Army Capt. Brian Hillner; great-grandchildren, Matthew, Parker, Paydon and Alexandra; nieces, Margie, Karen and Christine; and nephew, Charlie.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fairview Cemetery, Shawnee, under the direction of Walker Funeral Service.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Park Manor and Vista Hospice of Houston, Texas, for their loving care during Mrs. Ashford's final days.
