Death of C. C. Baldwin. Mr. Cornelius C. Baldwin died at his home near Glasgow, at 2 o'clock Mon day afternoon. He had for some time past, been infirm in mind and body by reason of advancing years. He was 83 years old.

During a former generation Mr. Baldwin was a man of importance and influence in the county.

He was born in Frederick County, Va., and was the son of Joseph Baldwin. One of his brothers, Joseph Baldwin, attained great celebrity as the writer of "The Flush Times of Alabama and Mississippi." Another, Judge Briscoe Baldwin, was a jurist of eminence.

Mr. Baldwin came to Lexington about 1834 and became editor of the Union. He was editor of that paper when, in 1836 it was changed to the Lexington Gazette. It was as editor of the Gazette that he attained a reputation that has survived him. He was an ardent Whig, a man of wide information and a master of controversial writing. Writing of this character was very popular in the papers of that day, and he upheld Whig principles with a trenchant pen.

After some years he left the Gazette and went into the practice of law. This he followed for a time. He then retired to a farm on North river where his after years were spent in comparative seclusion. In the period just before the wax he became an ardent Secessionist and along with John W. Brock enbrough was a Secession candidate from Rockbridge for the convention in 1861. They were defeated by Sam'l McDowell Moore and James B. Dorman, the county being strongly Union.

Mr. Baldwin was twice married. In 1837 he married Margaret Paxton, a daughter of Hugh Paxton of North river. Of this marriage one son is living, Dr. Joseph Baldwin of Maryland; two children died in recent years, John P. Baldwin and Mrs. Alex. M. Garber. Mr. Baldwin's second wife was Miss Susan Sale of this county, who survives him with one son, Briscoe Baldwin of Glasgow. He was buried at Glasgow Tuesday afternoon.
