Artie left NC early in life, and had not had much contact with the family until the 1950's when she finally came back to NC to visit family. It was a joyous reunion! I have a picture of Artie from that visit, and it is posted on this memorial. The picture and story was also printed in the Hickory Daily Record Newspaper (Hickory, NC) circa 1950's.

Artie Smart married J. S. "Jack" McFarland in Rutherford County, NC on July 17th, 1892. They left for TX, and while there - Jack died. We have no more records than that, but Artie returned back to NC/SC, then resided in GA.
Artie was shown as "widowed" in the 1920 GA Census. So Jack's death was prior to 1920.

Artie remarried sometime between 1920-1930 to John L. Newsome in Columbus GA. She was listed as Artie Newsome in a 1930 GA Census.

Artie had 4 children by her first husband Jack McFarland:
(m)Melburn McFarland of Los Angeles, CA
(f)Lima McFarland Hendricks of Columbus, GA
(m)Durward M. McFarland of Springfield, Ohio
(m)Robert H. McFarland of Columbus, GA

And a step daughter by her second husband John L. Newsome.
(f)Alberta Newsome DuBois of Columbus, GA
