Lt. Col. William Herbert "Bill" Fantone Jr., U.S. Air Force retired, 87, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006, after an illness of several months. He was married 49 years to the late Susan Payne Fantone. Born in Norfolk, he was the son of William Herbert Fantone and Ruth Taliferro Fantone. He graduated from Maury High School, American National University, Industrial College of the Armed Forces and Mercer University. He was a U.S. Air Force command pilot and a member of the World War II Delta Eagles. He served with the 9th Aviation Engineers in Europe, the 20th Air Force in the Pacific and the Far East Air Force in Asia. He also served with the Strategic Air Command 2nd Air Force and with Headquarters, Strategic Air Command in Omaha, Nebraska. Prior to his Air Force service, he was a member of the 29th Infantry Division, 111th Field Artillery. He was a member of the Retired Officers' Association and the Air Force Association. Upon retirement from the military, he joined The Lomas and Nettleton Company of Dallas, Texas. He retired in 1987 as executive vice president and regional manager for the Eastern United States. He was a cofounder and member of the board of directors of Peoples Savings and Loan Association of Virginia Beach, and a member of the board of directors of First American Savings and Loan Association, Woodbridge, Va.
He is survived by two daughters, Susan Fantone Warren, her husband, Bruce Warren, Mary Fantone Davies, her husband, Andy Davies; five grandchildren, Brian Warren, his wife Michelle and their children, Emily and Ben; Whitney Warren Booze, her husband, Chris, and their children, Gracie and Maggie; Christine Warren Rudolf, her husband, Chip and their children, Carley and Chase; Kelly Davies and Paige Davies, all of Virginia Beach. He is also survived by a sister, Helen Ann Fantone Kiley, and her husband Charles of Virginia Beach.
A graveside service will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. in Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery, Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, and will be conducted by Chaplain James Fedor. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Holy Family, 1279 North Great Neck Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23454, or The Foundation for The Howard and Georgeanna Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine, 601 Colley Ave., Norfolk, VA 23507.
