Mrs. Sarah Clifton Crump Connell, 91, passed away peacefully Sunday, November 20th, 2011 in McLeod Hospice House after a long illness. Mrs. Connell was born in Newberry on December 5th, 1919. She was a daughter of the late Ezekiel L. Crump, and her beloved mother, Florence Davis Crump, and was the widow of the late Debert W. Connell. Mrs. Connell leaves behind a powerful legacy of outstanding nursing care, beginning with her training at Spartanburg General Hospital where she graduated at the top of her class in 1946. She was known for her willingness to serve "the least of these", caring for the patients of Greenville General Hospital and Greenville Memorial Hospital with diligence and compassion. Several generations of nurses and doctors received the gift of her formidable intelligence and practical experience as they learned the arts of medicine and nursing. Mrs. Connell was also a well-know Girl Scout Leader during her daughters' childhood, and was responsible for leading the first integrated Girl Scout Troop in the Old Ninety-Six Girl Scout Council. She was a faithful member of Salem United Methodist Church in Greenville until her failing health prevented her regular attendance. Most of all, Mrs. Connell would want to be remembered as a devoted and much beloved mother and grandmother, and devout follower of Christ. Mrs. Connell's surviving family includes her children, Florence Connell Wright (Steven), of Columbia, Reverend Frances Sarah "Fran" Connell, of Scranton, and Charles Wilson "Chuck" Connell, of Greenville; her grand-children, Steven and Douglas Wright, both of Columbia, Michael Charles Ross (Angeles Lopez), of Oceanside, California, and Sarah Ross Ruiz (Joseph), of Santee, California; and her special caregiver, Barbara Osborne, of Coward. Mrs. Connell is preceded in death by her six brothers and sisters, Nancy Crump, Douglas Crump, Woodrow "Chuck" Crump, Lucille Boeye, Susannah "Suedie" Wicker, and Ezekiel L. "Zeke" Crump, Jr. The family of Mrs. Connell will receive friends from three-thirty until four-thirty o'clock p.m., today, Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011, in the Scranton United Methodist Church. Funeral services for Mrs. Connell will be held at four-thirty o'clock p.m., today, Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011, in the Scranton United Methodist Church. Burial will take place the following day, Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011, in Rosemont Cemetery in Newberry. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks for memorials to be made to McLeod Hospice House, 1203 East Cheves Street, Florence, South Carolina, with grateful appreciation for the compassionate care shown to Mrs. Connell during her times of need. Brockington Funeral Home, Lake City, is in charge.
