Prince. He was a Prince of Sweden and until 1905 of Norway. Bernadotte Dynasty. Duke of West Gothland. Son of King Oscar II and Queen Sofia. Through his daughters, for whom he arranged excellent dynastic marriages, he is an ancestor of many members of European royal houses today, including the monarchs of Belgium and Norway. He was known as "the Blue Prince" Blå Prinsen because he often wore the blue uniform of the Life Regiment, to which he belonged. Despite being very hard of hearing, he became a general, a member of the Swedish Academy of Sciences and was chairman of the Swedish Red Cross 1906-1945, actively taking part in its humanitarian work. In 1897 he married Princess Ingeborg of Denmark, the second daughter his cousin Queen Louise of Denmark. In 1947, on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary, Carl admitted that their marriage had been completely arranged by their respective fathers, and Ingeborg herself added : "I married a complete stranger!". Their marriage was happy anyway and the couple had four children. In 1905, during the political struggle in which Norway declared independence from Sweden, Prince Carl was seriously considered as a candidate for the Norwegian crown, a less radical way for Norway to secede from the union, and hence more peaceful. He was chosen because his eldest brother would inherit the Swedish throne, and his second brother had renounced his royal status for an unconstitutional marriage. His father King Oscar II did not approve the proposal, as he saw the whole crisis which precipitated the Norwegian exit as a vile betrayal of his rights as King of Norway, and did not want any of his sons to be involved. Instead, a Danish prince was elected King Haakon VII of Norway. Carl's daughter, Princess Märtha, married Haakon's son, the eventual King Olav V, so King Harald V of Norway is Prince Carl's grandson.
