Gladys, a long-time resident of Appleton and Oshkosh, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully at her apartment in Naperville, IL, on Friday, February 26, 2016, at the age of 103. She was actively visiting and playing cards with friends and family up to the final week of her life. She very much appreciated the final weeks of loving care provided by CNA's at her residence and by Hospice workers who indicated it was "an honor to take care of her."

She was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers, and by her daughter, Gretchen (Hansen) Charwat, of Vancouver, WA.

She is survived by her son, Craig Hansen and his wife Patricia White Hansen, of Naperville, IL; granddaughter Bethany Hansen, her husband Andrew Brown, and their daughter Ellen Debby Brown, all of Portland, OR; grandson Samuel Hansen of Seattle, WA; granddaughter Emily Hansen of Naperville, IL; and many nieces and nephews and their families.

In the early 1960's, having spent sixteen years raising two children, Gladys started a uniform shop in one-half of the camera store that she and her husband Les owned and operated in Fond du Lac. Her success in selling uniforms to medical personnel and waitresses led her to sell that shop in favor of starting a larger "Hansen's Uniforms" shop in the mid 1960's on Oneida Street in downtown Appleton. She then expanded to Green Bay where she started both a second uniform shop and a maternity wear shop. Her enjoyment of people, her staff, and retail sales in general made her business successful. At one point she was informed by the prestigious Barco Uniform Company that her shops had the sixth highest sales of their uniforms in the entire country! Gladys was an active member of the Appleton Chamber of Commerce, a frequent visitor to the Appleton YMCA, and alternately attended both the Oshkosh and Appleton Congregational churches.

Having reached her 70's and wanting to explore other interests, Gladys sold her businesses in 1984. She settled into a busy schedule of visiting with friends and family, taking domestic and international trips (China, Japan, Europe), hosting visits from her 3 prized grandchildren, doing volunteer driving for FISH, volunteering at The Hearthstone, and making quilts and braided rugs.

In September of 2014, at the age of 101, she moved from The Heritage, an independent living complex in Appleton, to a similar apartment complex in Naperville, IL, to be near her son Craig and his family. She continued to enjoy playing Scrabble, Cribbage, and especially the card game "SkipBo" along with outings to nearby natural settings such as the Morton Arboretum and Cantigny.

On Saturday, April 30, a memorial service to celebrate Gladys' long and full life will be held at the First Congregational UCC Church, 724 E. South River St, Appleton, WI, 54915. Visitation will be from 10AM to 11AM, with the memorial service at 11AM to be led by Rev. Steve Savides. After the service, the family will place Gladys' ashes in the church's Memorial Garden.
