Vinita resident Kenneth Earl ‘Pete’ Preston passed away on April 1, 2016. He was 89 years old.

Pete was born on November 10, 1926 to Earl R. and Clara (Kneeland) Preston in Yale, Okla.

Pete was a member of the ‘greatest generation’ and served in the U.S. Army during the invasion of Nazi Germany. Pete served in the Ordnance division. Returning home after the war, Pete began working for KAMO Power. He was one of the original employees. He retired from KAMO after working there for 40 years. Pete also made a living raising horses and cattle on the Diamond P Ranch in Missouri. He moved to Vinita after the death of his wife Ravenna, whom he lovingly called Dena.

Pete loved helping out at church. He enjoyed taking church trips with his friends, and mowing the lawn at Cowboy Junction, which he did until he was 85 years old.

Pete was a strict but loving father who could fix anything. His son recalls that Pete was everybody’s “fix-it” man. Pete used his creativity and “fix-it” abilities to help create inventions with his brother, Tommy, which were used to help with his work at KAMO. “He would always come up with the perfect solution," his son Paul said.

Pete created the design and had the electric brand made for Diamond P Ranch. On the brand, the diamond’s four sides symbolize Pete’s family; himself and his wife Dena, and his sons, Paul and Kep. The P in the middle is for the Preston name.

Pete is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ravenna (Lewis) Preston; his son, Kep Preston; his brother, William ‘Tommy’ Preston; and his sisters, Doris Buckland and Ruby Browning.

Pete is survived by his sister Wanna Fay Maddox of Harrison, Ark.; a brother Bill Preston of Flower Mound, Texas; his son Paul Preston and wife, DeDe, of Eufaula, Okla.; grandchildren, including Charity Preston, Jason Preston and Cassandra Gilbert; great grandchildren, Bryce and Blaine Gilbert.

There will be a visitation Tuesday, April 5 from 5-7 p.m. at the Burckhalter Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will be Wednesday, April 6 at Cowboy Junction Church in Vinita. Interment will follow at Ketchum Cemetery. Military honors will be given at the cemetery by Miami American Legion Post 147.
