Born June 24, 1962 in Kingston, he was the son of the late Walter Hung, Sr. and Helen Hung.
Walter grew up on Main Street in the nearby hamlet of Ruby. His father, Walter Hung, Sr., owned and operated the former Elmer's Inn, which was originally established by Walters' grandfather, Elmer Hung.
Life threw many curves at Walt but he constantly remained upbeat and responded by knocking the ball out of the park. A simple yet very proud man, he ignored various issues that challenged him and insisted on working hard to earn his living. For the past 16 years he was a dedicated sales clerk for Marshalls department store in the Town of Ulster.
To say that Walt was a people person would be the ultimate understatement. He had more friends and acquaintances than anyone could possibly count, even rivaling local icon William "Uncle Willy" Guldy, who Walt also counted as a good friend. Walt was a person who enjoyed the good things in life; especially good friends, good food and good drink. He was the classic bon vivant; the ultimate man about town. He was a regular at numerous local gin mills and especially enjoyed hoisting a cold pint at his two favorite watering holes, Keegan Ales and Uncle Willy's.
Walt was an incredible person. For a man who had no car nor driver license, he seemed to be absolutely everywhere. His bicycle was his main mode of transportation and he logged many thousands of countless miles throughout the city of Kingston and the surrounding countryside over the years. And no one can ever remember him missing a good party.
Walt was also known as Kingston's informal "Town Crier." He loved the local gossip mill and thoroughly enjoyed spreading it around town. He seemed to know more about what was going on in the Kingston area than any other resident. He never owned a computer or smartphone and didn't need to since his stories reached their destination faster than any Facebook page or Twitter account possibly could.
Walt also loved attending functions with his many good friends at both the Ruby Rod & Gun Club and the Ruby Firehouse. Halloween was one of his favorite holidays and he was very fond of carving pumpkins for children and decorating for the annual Halloween Bash back in his old stomping grounds.
For a man of modest means, he was an extremely giving person who took great joy in surprising people with small but meaningful gifts. And his sense of humor and dry wit was second to none. Walt was also an avid New York Mets fan who took great pleasure in deriding certain "misguided" Yankees fans. He was also a big lover of music, especially the local classic rock music scene, and he would travel near and far to hear his favorite bands play----especially The Paul Luke Band.
Walt also had an uncanny memory, remembering minute details of even minor occurrences over his lifetime. And when you met Walt, he was your friend forever, because he would never forget a name or face.
Kingston has lost a good, solid citizen and a good, kind-hearted soul. If the true measure of a man's wealth is the number of friends he has and the lives he has touched, then Walter Hung, Jr. was, without a doubt, one of the richest men on the planet.
