Elizabeth Ann was the daughter of Alexander 'Alex' Herbert Sloan, 1877-1952, and Casandra 'Cassie' Elizabeth Ellington, 1878-1933. She was the granddaughter of Civil War Veteran POW David Morris Sloan, 1845-1904, and Mary Jane Watson 1847-1917.

Elizabeth was the fifth child born of five children. Her siblings are, in order of age: Mary Elva, 1907-1992; Reams Bradsher, 1909-1910; Helen Louvina, 1915-1940; Leon Ellington, 1918-1919; and Elizabeth Ann, 1922-2001.

She married John Gordon Burns Sr. on 2 May 1941 in Durham, Durham, NC. Elizabeth and John were married in the Duke University Chapel in Durham, North Carolina. John was the son of John Green Burns, 1890-1962, and Alliene Gordon Orman, 1896-1954. To this union were born two sons. They are John Gordon Burns Jr., 1943, and Thomas Alexander, 1951.
