In her teens, Hattie worked for a doctor in Scurry County, Texas. When he no longer needed her services, he helped her find work in private homes in Scurry and Nolan Counties. On his recommendation to a fellow physician in Roscoe she secured employment as a domestic in the home of Josephine Weems Slater, b:1889 in Texas and William V.B. "Bill" Slater. Hattie was hired by the Slaters to keep house so that Mrs. Slater would have more time to care for her growing family. Within two years, multiple tragedies took the lives of three of the five Slater children and when Mrs. Slater died suddenly on January 31, 1923, Hattie took over the household and brought her seven year old daughter to live in the Slater home. She and widower Bill Slater were married on April 20, 1923. After their marriage, Hattie gave birth to two sons.
