Earle Norris Ahlquist, 89
YARMOUTH - Earle Norris Ahlquist, age 89, went home to be with the Lord on March 25, 2016, surrounded by family and friends at Coastal Manor, in Yarmouth. Earle felt blessed with his long life and was certain God was good to him.
Earle was born on May 9, 1926, in Scarborough. Growing up at the family farm as the eldest son of Rudolph and Marjorie (Chadbourne) Ahlquist, he and his siblings learned early the joys and responsibilities required during the depression and war years.
Earle graduated from Scarborough schools, interrupting his education to enlist in the US Marine Corps on April 18, 1944. He served in the 4th Marine Division and was among the first waves of Marines to land on Iwo Jima on Feb. 19, 1945. He saw the US flag raised on Mount Suribachi and was wounded on his ninth day of combat. Former Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith (then a member of Congress) subsequently saw Earle at a Marine hospital in Hawaii and personally contacted Earle's parents to let them know their son was alive and recovering from his wounds.
Earle went on to develop the Ahlquist Builders & Movers Company. He built a reputation for tackling challenging building moving situations, moving buildings even across icy waters. The evening news that aired Huntley-Brinkley reported Earle moving a massive timber-framed building across frozen Sebago Lake in the mid-1950s. Earle was one of the primary movers whose buildings created Peary Village in South Portland.
Earle was a Maine Guide for 35 years and went on to lead Allagash River Trips and teach industrial arts at Biddeford High School. In the 1950's, Earle led a fishing trip to the Allaghash region that included Red Sox legend Ted Williams. He was an avid historian and was the primary compiler of a genealogy volume entitled The Paul Chadbourne Family of Waterboro, Maine. It traced his mother's family back to 1634.
He was predeceased by his first wife Winonah Bowley Ahlquist; granddaughter Alicia Ahlquist; son Philip C. Ahlquist; brother Leroy Ahlquist, sister Pauline Ferrara, brother-in-law Gerald Link, and sisters-in-law Evelyn Bruns Ahlquist and Patricia Weeman Ahlquist.
Earle is survived by wife Betty Haney Ahlquist of Scarborough; daughter Earlene (Kitty) Chadbourne and her husband Ted of Cumberland, son Oren (Buddy) Ahlquist of Scarborough, daughter Lorraine (Dolly) Ahlquist of California; grandchildren, Guy Cote and his wife Kelly of Florida, Adam Cote and his wife Paula of Springvale, Valerie and her husband Tom Cotnoir of Waterville; seven great-grandchildren; and family by marriage - Neil and his wife Kasia Amari of Texas , Deborah, Tania, Dori and Teri Chadbourne and Todd Posey. He is also survived by his sister Florence Link of Scarborough, brother Edward Ahlquist of Gorham; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in America and Norway.
The family is grateful for the love and respectful care Earle received at both the Togus VA and Coastal Manor, where Earle spent many hours recounting his entertaining life experiences.
Friends and family may call at the Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home and Cremation, 13 Portland Rd, Buxton (Bar Mills), Tuesday, March 29, 2016, from 4 to 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held Wednesday March 30, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home and concluded with US Marine Corp funeral honors. Burial will be at South Gorham Cemetery at a later date.
