In 1867, when Mary was 24, she conceived a child with her neighbor, William H. H. Swaney. She named her son, Frederick Patton Hartman. Mary's parents Charles and Jane (Gates) Hartman helped her raise Fred. Fred had another half brother George, whose mother was Mariah Huntley, also a neighbor of William H. H. Swaney. George did carry the Swaney name. At some point William H. H. Swaney married a Lavina Patterson Victor and they had several children. Although Fred Hartman was an only child he had several half brothers and sisters.
Approximately 10 years later Mary J. Hartman married a widower, Joseph Goodwin. His wife was Ruth Richardson. Mary J. Hartman Goodman remained in the Smithfield area.
