He was born in Milwaukee, on December 3, 1923, a son of Cyril Nicholas and Mildred (Ament) Gearhard.
Nicholas married Shirley Sieber in a Catholic Church ceremony and later married LaVerne Schmittinger in a Catholic Church ceremony.
Nicholas worked for American Motors of Milwaukee for 33 years, and spent many years working as a custodian for Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church. After his retirement, he moved to Neshkoro where he was known as “Mr. Nick”, working at the Neshkoro Elementary School from 1984-1991.
Nicholas loved his grandchildren. He enjoyed going fishing and gambling.
Nicholas is survived by his son, Nicholas (Barbara) Gearhard Jr., of Germantown; 2 granddaughters, Connie Vires and Jessi Cook; grandson, Larry Zarling Jr.; 4 great grandchildren; sister, Mildred DeCsaby of Marietta, GA; first wife, Shirley Rickels of Montello; many nieces and nephews, many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his second wife, LaVerne (Schmittinger) Gearhard; daughter, Kathleen Cook; brother, John Gearhard; sister, Marie Sieber.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Nicholas Gearhard Sr. will be held on Friday, January 29, 2016, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation beginning after the 9:30 a.m. family rosary at St. James Catholic Church, 315 N. Main St., in Neshkoro. Father Dale Grubba will officiate. Burial will take place in the Underhill Cemetery in Packwaukee.
