Paul Achenbach was a member of the Petoskey Rotary Club, the Petoskey Elks Club, the Petoskey-Bay View Golf Club, and the Episcopal Church He served in the army during World War II. Afterward, he participated in the American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was known to many as a quiet and friendly man. Long time Petoskey resident and former Emmet County Prosecutor (1963-1969), Wayne Richard "Dick" Smith, knew Paul quite well. Paul had worked in Mr. Smith's father's insurance office prior to going out on his own. Mr. Smith said of Paul in a recent interview: "I knew Paul . . . he was a partner in my dad's insurance business for about one year . . . Paul was always neat and nicely dressed, a soft spoken gentleman . . ."

Paul owned the Achenbach Insurance Agency on 218 Park Avenue through 1958. He, his wife Gretchen, and their son Bill, enjoyed many summers at their family cottage in Bay View, Michigan.
