HOILES, David Gray Sr.
David Gray Hoiles, Senior (1937-2013) passed away on August 17. Born to Harold and Hilda Hoiles in Teaneck, New Jersey, he was the younger of two boys. His brother, "Billy," served in the USMC and was killed during the Korean War in 1951. Having grown up on the East Coast and graduated from Brown University in 1959, Dave came to California to attend graduate school. While in school he began work at Occidental Life Insurance Company in Downtown LA and met his wife, Aileen Hitchcock, there in 1961. Dave and Aileen married in 1965 and moved to Whittier that same year, where they raised their three children, Victoria, David Jr., and Katherine. Family was an important part of Dave Senior's life and he spent many evenings and weekends watching various sporting, dance, drama and school events in which his children participated.
Also important to Dave was the First United Methodist Church of Whittier, which he joined in the late 1960's. Dave sang in the choir for many years, served as the lay leader and on various committees, and was active at the district level of the UMC. After retiring from Occidental (now called Transamerica) in 1997, Dave cared for his mother until her death in 2000. Later, he began working in the church office at St. Matthew's Methodist Church in Hacienda Heights, where he continued until his death. After his children were grown, Dave explored the world, traveling to Denmark, Italy, Egypt and Hawaii with family, often accompanied by a copy of the Whittier Daily News, which always showed up in a photo. He also enjoyed collecting stamps, reading, crossword puzzles and gardening.
Dave is survived by his wife, three children, their spouses, and nine grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the First United Methodist Church of Whittier Memorial Fund, with a designation that the contribution be used for the music program.
