John Elliott Hollowell of Albany, GA, passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2016.

The funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday March 5, 2016 at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church with interment to follow in the Crown Hill Cemetery. A prayer service will be held at 6:00 PM on Friday March 4, 2016 at Kimbrell-Stern.

Mr. Hollowell was born to John Franklin and Lucy Elliott Hollowell on April 1, 1926 in Goldsboro, NC. He and his two younger brothers were raised in Eagletown, NC by their mother after the death of their father in 1933. John enlisted with the United States Navy in 1944 and served aboard the USS Chicago until 1946. Upon returning home, John completed his education at North Carolina State University in 1949, and he began working for John Deere that year.

John married the love of his life, Mary Louise Steele, on January 12, 1957, after eight years of dating. They settled in Lake City, Florida, where John worked as a regional territory manager for John Deere. The family relocated to Albany, GA in 1973, and John and Mary Louise have lived here as active members of the community and their church, St. Theresa’s since then.

John was a man who thrived on activity. Although he retired from John Deere in 1982, he continued to work part-time until 2009. A career of travel suited John, whose wanderlust was ever present until his death. John and Mary Louise traveled all over the US and took several trips overseas, including visits to Ireland, Italy, and the Holy Land.

An avid and innovative craftsman, John was locally famous for his “5-Degree Stools” and wind chimes; he loved to make and distribute them among family and friends. John’s generous and thoughtful nature was evident to everyone who knew him. He was a proud charter member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club and until recently, a volunteer for local charities St. Clare’s Community Center (where he helped establish the thrift shop in 1984), and Meals on Wheels. His dedication to service did not end with his local community; John was a charter member of the WWII museum in New Orleans, and contributed to the WWII veterans’ memorial in Washington, DC.

Mr. Hollowell is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Louise, daughters Margaret Caufield and Mary Alice Pearson, and grandchildren Christina, Paul, Emma, and Sean.

In lieu of flowers, Mr. Hollowell requested that donations to be made to St. Clare’s Community Center.
