From a National Archives War of 1812 Claim of widow for service pension-Michael Awalt served as a Private in the Tennessee Militia Company commanded by Capt. William Russell.(Russell's Separate Battalion, Mounted Gunmen) He volunteered September 25,1814 in Lincoln County, Tennessee in the War of 1812. He was honorably discharged at New Orleans on March 15, 1815, aged 28.

March 18, 1881, Sarah Tipps Awalt, widow of Michael Awalt, applied for this pension under the Act of Congress of March 9, 1878. She was 90 and living in Iowa. She stated they moved from TN to IN where Michael died in Bartholomew, Co., Columbus, IN and she then moved to Iowa.

This is a memorial marker only here in Winchester City Cemetery. It is honoring his War of 1812 service for Tennessee. He died and is buried on his farm in Bartholomew County, Indiana.

His father, Michael Abraham Awalt Sr. also served as a Captain in the Tennessee Militia in the War of 1812. He was 58. He was also a veteran of the American Revolution for service in North Carolina.
