She was born in Ukiah, California on December 25, 1932 to Joseph G. and Irma F. Hurt of Covelo. In 1938, she moved with her family from Covelo to Williams.
Joanne attended Williams Schools and graduated from Williams High School with the Class of 1950. Following graduation, she attended St. Luke's School of Nursing in San Francisco where she received her degree in 1953.
She worked as a registered nurse in Eugene, Oregon, Mills Hospital in San Mateo, Colusa Regional Medical Center, and Valley West Care Center. At Colusa Hospital, she was instrumental in developing the Intensive Care Unit for which she is remembered.
Joanne married James T. Dermody of San Mateo in 1960 and they made their home in Hollister for a number of years with their sons, Tom and Frank. Following her husband's death, she and her boys moved back to Williams in 1970.
She was also preceded in death by her sister, Anita Roberts of Grass Valley.
Joanne is survived by her sons, Thomas E. Dermody and his wife Aileen, Franklin C. Dermody and his wife Patrice, grandchildren Matthew Dermody, Melissa Katris, and Holly Dermody, great-granddaughter Gracie Katris, and a sister, Colleen Manor.
She was a member of Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church in Colusa where she served as organist and on the Vestry.
Celebration of Life will be planned at a later date.
