OBIT - Wapello Republican, Wapello, Louisa County, Iowa, Thursday, January 30, 1908:

Elmer Staats died suddenly last Friday evening after a few hours illness from cerebro-spinal meningitis. He was the son of Jasper Staats and was born and brought up in this vicinity. He was about 41 years of age and leaves a wife and nine children to mourn his sudden death. Elmer Staats was a quiet, unobtrusive man, honest, industrious, a good workman at whatever he turned his hand to--a fair carpenter and mason, and reliable and trustworthy in all his relations in life. He was of an especially cheerful disposition, was good in the family and was respected by all who knew him, loved by those who came to know him intimately. Like his father before him, he loved the woods, delighted in hunting and fishing, and had a wealth of the lore of the woods and fields, a knowledge of bird and animal life which made him an entertaining talker to the few who came to know the heart of the man. He was sober, clean in his life and speech, and his death is sincerely mourned by his family and friends. The funeral was held Sunday at 10 a.m. with interment at Harrison where other members of the family are buried.
