The younger of two daughters born to John and Josie Bingham Carnley. Dorthula was badly burned when her clothing caught on fire from an open gas heater. Her mother, Josie Carnley, a widow, was at work when the accident occurred. Dorthula was survived by her mother, a brother and sister.

Funeral services were held at the family home at 2 o'clock on December 15, 1919. Burial in Landmark Cemetery was under the direction of F. H. Ruebel & Co.
