PVT Edwin Cole Ayres, Co. D, 33rd Illinois Infantry, and Co. G, 72nd Illinois Infantry. Enlisted 5 Feb 1864 for 3 years. Discharged 24 Nov 1865 at Vicksburg, MS, age 18, born Newark, New Jersey, 5' 8" high, light complexion, light hair, blue eyes, occupation prior to the war: clerk.

In the past in the Ayers family it was not uncommon for the father's last name to have the spelling as Ayers and the son or grandson to have a spelling of Ayres. Sometimes this was done by people who were writing the records and at other times the headstone engraver changed the spelling.
