Julia Frances Varner was the oldest child of James Milton and Dora Plummer Varner. She was born in a farmhouse on the present-day Kennedy Farm Road in Randolph County, North Carolina. In September 1919, she married Fred Cranford. He worked at Chinqua Penn Plantation and was a driver for Coble Dairy.
Frances was the mother of three sons: James Colon Cranford, Billy Gene Cranford, and John Penn Cranford. When her husband was killed when he fell asleep at the wheel of his dairy truck, Frances and the boys moved in with her parents.
She worked at the Kerr Bleachery in Concord, North Carolina for many years.
She died at age 98, the last survivor of 8 brothers and sisters.
