He was born Nov. 23, 1918, in Sumter County, a son of the late Grace Keels Thomas and Bennett Miller Thomas .
He was a World War II veteran and served from 1941 to 1944 in the 118th Infantry in Europe. His unit was among the first to land at Normandy, France, and advanced on to Berlin with only three or four of the original unit surviving.
After he was discharged from the Army, he went back to work for Singer Sewing Machine Co. as a sales representative in the Rock Hill area. He retired as Charlotte district manager after 31 years with Singer, having moved to Charlotte in 1952.
He was a member of Central United Methodist Church for almost 50 years and its Wesleyan Service Sunday school class, and he served as class president for eight years. He was also a member of the United Methodist Men and the Agape Sharing Group. He was a charter member of the Senior Citizens and Friends group.
He was a member of East Gate Lodge No. 692 AF&AM. He was an avid fisherman, especially at the Surfside Beach pier.
He was predeceased by a loving son, Sammie Cecil Thomas Jr.; and a sister, Elaine Thomas Phillips Dorrell.
