Roman Catholic Cardinal. Mondavio born, Giuseppe Paupini entered seminary in Fano, later furthering his studies in Rome at the Pontifical Lateran Athenaeum, earning a doctorate in canon law. Ordained priest on March 19, 1930 in Fano, he lectured canon law at the seminary of the latter city between 1932 and 1939 when he entered the service of the Secretariat of State as attaché of the apostolic nunciature in France. Secretary of the nunciature in Italy and successively chargé d'affaires of the nunciatures of Honduras and Nicaragua as well as that of Cuba between 1947 and 1951, when he was promoted to nunciature counselor and destined to the Secretariat of State. Pope Pius XII appointed him apostolic internuncio in Iran and apostolic administrator of Ispahan of the Latins on February 2, 1956 with Paupini receiving his episcopal consecration with the titular archbishopric see of Sebastopoli di Abasgia on the following February 26 from Cardinal Valerio Valeri in Rome. Named nuncio in Guatemala and El Salvador on February 25, 1957 and nuncio in Colombia on May 23, 1959, Pope Paul VI created him cardinal deacon in the consistory of April 28, 1969 with the deaconry of Ognissanti in Via Appia Nuova. Named grand penitentiary of the Apostolic Penitentiary on March 21, 1973, he opted for the order of priests on June 30, 1979 with his deaconry being elevated 'pro illa vice' to title. Resigning the post of grand penitentiary on April 8, 1984, he acted as camerlengo of the College of Cardinals from June 22, 1987 until May 2, 1988. Spending his remaining years in Rome at via Rusticucci 13, the eve before his death he was recovered at the Policlinico Gemelli after being stricken by severe chest pain. Succumbing on the morrow at eighty five years of age, his body was transported to his native Mondavio for interment inside the collegiate church of Ss. Pietro e Paterniano. The Centro di Spiritualità di San Francesco of Rovereto, inaugurated on October 4, 1992, was opened with the assets left by the Cardinal in his will for that purpose.
