Halbert M. J. Richards, born May 5, 1869, at Mineral Point, Wis.; died at Glendale, Calif., May 25, 1956. At the age of 7 he accompanied his parents to England, and as a young man he joined the Seventh-day Adventist church. When 17 years old he returned to America. Later he sold Bibles and Christian books door-to-door, and then began full-time work in the Iowa Conference. In 1893 he was united in wedlock with Berta C. Sylvester. His ordination occurred May 30, 1897. In 1899 Elder Richards was transferred to the Colorado Conference, where he became vice-president and established Campion Academy. In 1912 he was called to the presidency of the East Pennsylvania Conference. Later while president of the Ontario [Canada] Conference he appeared before parliamentary committees to make the way easier for Seventh-day Adventists in the Canadian Army. In 1918 he became president of the Texico Conference, and some years later was chosen to lead out in the Arkansas Conference. Then he served as chaplain of the St. Helena Sanitarium. For a number of years he was pastor at Mountain View, Calif., and his last pastorate was in the East Long Beach church. He served briefly as chaplain of the Glendale Sanitarium, then joined the Voice of Prophecy staff. He is survived by his wife; 2 sons, H. M. S. Richards of the Voice of Prophecy, and Kenneth D. N. Richards of Washington, D.C.; 7 grandchildren, 2 of whom are ministers and another a teacher at Washington Missionary College; and 5 great-grandchildren.
