Roman Catholic Pope. The 12th occupant of the Holy See, elected in 166 AD. An Italian born in Fondi, his papacy ended 174 AD. He was predecessor of Pope Anicetus and successor of Pope Eleuterus. The inauguration of Easter as an annual Roman Festival is attributed to him. Soter died as a martyr under Marcus Aurelius and was buried in the catacomb of Callixtus in Saint Peter's Basilica.
