Civil War Union Soldier. He was 21 years old when he was enrolled in the 15th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry on August 11, 1862 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mustered in as a Private in Company D on August 22, 1862 at Carlisle, Pennsylvania, he was transferred to Company M at an unrecorded date. He served with the unit in Virginia and as it was transferred to Tennessee in the winter of 1862, where his regiment took part in the Murfreesboro Campaign, and lost a number of men and officers the subsequent three day battle. On July 7, 1863 he was discharged from the 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry to accept a commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry, which received on July 8, 1863. Mustered into Company M on July 23, 1863, on October 4, 1863 he was transferred to Company K, and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant. He then served through the end of the war, and into his regiment's post-war occupation duty in the South. He was commissioned as Captain of Company I, but was never mustered into that rank and duty, as he was honorably mustered out on November 1, 1865.

Early the next year he enlisted in the Regular Army, and was commissioned on February 23, 1866 as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 15th United States Regular Infantry. Transferred to 33rd United States Regular Infantry on September 21, 1866, he would serve with the regiment until May 1869, receiving a promotion to 1st Lieutenant on January 17, 1867, and being appointed Regimental Adjutant on August 24, 1868. On May 3, 1869 he was transferred to the 8th United States Regular Infantry, a unit he would serve with until his death at Asbury Park, New Jersey on July 28, 1880.

His funeral services were held at Christ Church, Bordentown, New Jersey.
