James Davis Boyd was born in Chester County, SC, and moved to Choctaw County, MS, in 1856. He was a farmer. He was married twice, first to Harriet Fielder Robbins on March 8, 1845, and then to Rachel Edella Minter in November 1853. James and Harriet had one child together, James Joseph Boyd. The marriage to Rachel produced eight offspring: William Russell,John Leroy, Lewis Minter, Robert Love, Margaret Lucinda, Amzi Neely, Augustus Mecklin, and Walter Gray.
