Lemuel was born in Barron County, Kentucky on October 6, 1818 to Thomas and Nancy Anderson Blakey, one of ten children.

The family came to Texas in January, 1832 from Anderson Ferry, Tennessee, and within hours of landing at Velasco, Thomas died.

Lemuel later joined the militia as a member of Captain Jesse Billingsley's company and was killed in the Battle of San Jacinto.

He and seven other men who died during the battle were laid to rest on the battlefield in the area that they had camped in on April 20th.
