King of Afghanistan. King Mohammad Nadir Shah was born in British India where his grandfather had been exiled. He visited Afghanistan, became a General, and led the Afghan National Army in the Third Anglo-Afghan War. After the war, King Mohammad Nadir Shah became the Minister of War and Afghan Ambassador to France. By 1929, he had captured a majority of Afghanistan and executed the reigning King. After becoming King, he began to abolish many of the rules set forth by the previous monarchy in an effort to modernize Afghanistan. In 1931 he assisted in establishing Afghanistan's first university and initiated a banking system within the country. By the time of his assassination in 1933, King Mohammad Nadir Shah had developed an army consisting of more than 40,000 individuals.
